Host City - FREMANTLE

Fremantle holds a unique place in Western Australian history and is one of Australia’s major port cities. At the mouth of the Swan River, the area is of cultural significance to indigenous people. Since settlement of the colony in 1829 Fremantle has been a centre for commerce, culture and community life as well as a transport hub for the state and nation. It is internationally significant as the entry point for hundreds of thousands of migrants to Australia.

Fremantle’s built environment illustrates waves of growth of the port city - including early settlement, 18 years of convict transportation, a late 19th century gold boom and the America’s Cup in 1986 - and provides the context within which the major elements of its significance can be read and understood. Commerce and trade from a vibrant maritime industry continues into the 21st century and tourism now plays a major part in the city’s social and economic life.

The 19th century harbour, designed by celebrated engineer C Y O’Connor, continues to grow, modernize and introduce new civic and commercial uses. Victoria Quay is a mostly intact industrial site directly connected to the working port, the commercial district in Fremantle’s historic West End and the dynamic city centre.

The port city of Fremantle is an ideal location to explore the changing face of ports and their impact on associated cities or towns. Streets and pubs once filled with wharfies and sailors now host tourists and university students. Cranes, lifts and gantries have replaced the muscle and sweat of lumpers. A migrant’s first view of their new land is now an airport tarmac rather than the sheds and wharves of the harbour.

Venue - FREMANTLE TOWN HALL

The Australia ICOMOS 2006 National Conference will be held in the Fremantle Town Hall, Kings Square, Fremantle, Western Australia.

The Fremantle Town Hall was officially opened on the 22nd June 1887, to coincide with Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. It has gone through many changes since then, culminating in 1986 with the Town Hall being re-opened by the honourable RJL Hawke, Prime Minister of Australia. Fully restored to its original grandeur, it is a shining example of 19th Century classical architecture.

The hall is in the centre of Fremantle, the main port and gateway to Perth and Western Australia. Careful planning for the preservation of historic buildings has resulted in the heritage classification of more than 120 places in central Fremantle. King’s Square, just outside, gives yet another dimension.

Fremantle’s cosmopolitan culture is unique and the City is a thriving centre for artists, crafts people, writers, film makers and performers of all kinds.
