invitation from ANZAM President
As President of ANZAM, I am very pleased to invite you to register for the 21st Annual ANZAM Conference to be held in Sydney, Australia, from 4-7 December 2007.
Conference Convenor, Professor Ross Chapman from the University of Western Sydney, has taken every step to ensure that we have an excellent academic and social programme for this conference. Special thanks to Ross and his organising team for all of their efforts to organise an outstanding ANZAM conference!
This ANZAM conference will provide an excellent forum for management scholars and practitioners from Australasia and around the globe to present, discuss and debate leading edge management research. In addition to the keynote speakers and plenary panels, the programme includes in 16 streams of research presentations, 12 interactive workshops, and poster presentations. Opportunities to network and interact with others are also provided throughout the conference from the Welcome Reception, the Conference Dinner, to (an optional extra) Sydney Harbour Cruise.
We look forward to welcoming you to this 21st ANZAM Conference in Sydney!

invitation from conference chair
On behalf of the ANZAM Executive and the University of Western Sydney, I invite you to participate in the 21st annual Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management Conference, ANZAM 2007, to be held in the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel, Sydney December 4-7, 2007. This conference has been more than two years in the planning, and incorporates a number of new features to improve the value of the conference to all delegates.
The theme for this year’s conference is “Managing Our Intellectual and Social Capital”. It is increasingly clear that current and future organisational success relies to a large extent upon the capability of the organisation’s managers to identify, develop and extend their knowledge resources and social networks within and beyond the organisational boundaries. Irrespective of the sector, the industry, or the form of the organisation, the ability to create and foster network connections and interorganisational relationships, coupled with the related knowledge sourcing, integration and extension capabilities will underwrite the organisation’s success or otherwise. This theme provides great scope for presenters and delegates to explore and discuss these key aspects of management
Keynote speakers Prof Dorothy Leonard from Harvard Business School (who will be speaking on her research topic of “Deep Smarts” within organisations) and Prof John Bessant from Imperial College, London have both confirmed their involvement. Prof Bessant will also be involved in the Doctoral Workshop (on December 4 and 5 prior to the main conference), and both speakers will be part of the joint Industry-Academia Panel forming the Plenary Session on Thursday December 6, addressing the topic: “Friends, Foes or Freeloaders?: Building Knowledge Networks Between Business And Academia”. The Panel will include our Keynote Speakers, Mr John Phillips, AO, Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney and Chairman of the Foreign Investment Review Board, Ms Lindley Edwards, CEO of The Venture Bank Group, and Mr Roger Corbett, former CEO of Woolworths, Australia. This Panel will explore the management of intellectual and social capital in leading firms and the linkages between academia and business in Australia and elsewhere.
In addition to the plenary sessions discussed above, the conference will feature parallel sessions of papers across all of the 16 streams offered in the conference program (see below), plus between 12 interactive workshop sessions of around 90 minutes each on topics of wide interest to business academics, and a Poster Presentation area where researchers can display there research activities and discuss its implications with interested delegates. Of course there will also be an extensive Exhibition area for trade exhibitors, a Conference Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening, and a formal Conference Dinner (with a great band and room for some dancing) on Thursday evening. On Friday evening there will be an optional Harbour Cruise to wrap up the conference and provide an opportunity to sample the beauty of Sydney Harbour at night. I would like to express a heartfelt vote of thanks to the fantastic job undertaken by the Stream Chairs (see right) and the many paper reviewers, all of whom have given up their own time to ensure the quality of presentations at the Conference is maintained.
I am sure the conference will provide a unique opportunity for strong interaction between management researchers, and between business leaders with an interest in effective organisational management and academic researchers and educators. I am extremely pleased with the large number and high quality of the papers submitted; over 450 papers have been submitted for refereeing, along with a large number of nonrefereed papers and poster presentations. I am also very proud of the calibre of our international keynote speakers; and the financial and institutional sponsors who have supported the conference. Sydney is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities of the world. Built around the stunning Sydney Harbour, the city provides opportunities for recreation, entertainment and unforgettable sightseeing. The conference venue, the Sofitel Wentworth Sydney is ideally located in Sydney’s CBD, with both Darling Harbour and the Rocks areas a pleasant stroll away. I look forward to meeting you at ANZAM 2007 and can promise you a stimulating learning and networking experience.
See you in Sydney in December!
