Widely believed to be the most beautiful city in Australia, Perth is located on Australia's Sunset Coast on the banks of the Swan River, between the Archaean hinterland of the Yilgarn Craton and the Indian Ocean. In its architecture and layout, Perth reflects its early history of European settlement, yet its cosmopolitan atmosphere owes much to recent decades of multiculturalism. With a current population approaching 2 million, it is Australia's most rapidly growing city, hosting the same range of facilities found in Sydney or Melbourne, but preserving a relaxed 'outdoor' lifestyle, where tourists and locals alike can enjoy its mediterranean climate, broad sweeping beaches, numerous sporting events and proximity to vineyards and wildflowers in the hills to the east of the city.

Perth is serviced by a range of major airlines, with a choice of routes for international travellers. It has direct international flights to New Zealand and several capitals in Asia and is the only Australian capital city with direct links to Africa. Other international flights are routed to Perth via Sydney, or to Europe and North America via Asia. Domestic carriers are active within Western Australia and provide airlinks to regional centres and other State capital cities. Perth International Airport is about 20 minutes drive from the centre of Perth and is serviced by taxis and a shuttle bus service, which also services the nearby domestic terminal (located about 15 minutes drive on the opposite side of the airport complex from the international terminal.
