introduction
The conference ‘Borers and Rots in Eucalypts: Commercial Management Issues’, will be held in Western Australia from Monday 5 November to Wednesday 7 November 2007. The first two days will be spent inspecting problems in saw mills, eucalypt plantations and native forests in the South West and be followed by a full day of plenary sessions in Perth.
The reduced availability of large sectioned defect-free timber from old-growth forests has made it a priority to increase the commercial value of timber from plantations and regrowth native forests where damage by borers and rots has become increasingly evident.
Problems associated with borers and rots in both plantation and native forest eucalypts have been recognised and studied for decades. Unfortunately little progress has been made in reducing the commercial damage caused. By pooling widespread experience, the objective of the conference will be to seek commercial management solutions thereby adding value to the commercial eucalypt resources.
The conference will consider damage to living eucalypt trees and freshly felled logs. It will not cover subsequent damage to sawn timber.
I would like to invite you to register for this important conference. I look forward to seeing you in November.
