WORKSHOP 1

Working with high conflict clients: skill development
Mr Bill Eddy (National Conflict Resolution Center, California)

Cost: A$154 inc GST and morning tea Minimum 20 participants required This workshop will provide role-play exercises for mediators in handling High Conflict Clients in any type of dispute. First, an overview will be provided of the Cycle of High Conflict Thinking and three key techniques will be explained for handling highly emotional clients in mediation. Then, participants will practice the three key techniques in mock mediations. All participants will have the opportunity to be a mediator and a disputant.

Contents: Understanding the Cycle of High-Conflict Thinking Connecting with Empathy, Attention and Respect (E.A.R.) Respectfully shifting highly emotional clients into realistic, productive tasks Setting limits with high conflict clients and educating about consequences

Who Should Attend: All mediators, whether new or experienced.

WORKSHOP 2

Common hurdles and negotiation techniques experienced during mediations and how to manage these

Common patterns of bargaining and what to expect; Standard doubt creation concepts and sentences used by mediators and clients; Three ways to begin negotiations; Six key numbers which need to be prepared before each mediation; developing five humble hypotheses with clients early; how to do a risk and goal analysis as a mediator; How to help clients package alternative offers; what are the common hurdles and mistakes? - eg duelling experts; influential outsiders; overconfidence; post settlement regrets; drafting bumps; decision traps etc. How to anticipate and respond to these hurdles?

Who Should Attend: This workshop is part of a longer workshop delivered to law firms, builders, school teachers, FRCs, mediators and business administrators in Australia and elsewhere.

A poster is an alternative way to present a paper. Poster presentation is designed to allow presenters maximum personal interaction with many attendees at one time. Poster presentations are an excellent way of getting feedback from interested and knowledgeable researchers and also useful for extending personal networks.

Presenters stand next to their visual presentation as delegates look for topics of interest, following which a detailed, one-on-one discussion can be conducted.
