CONFERENCE STREAM - City Environment

Dr Julian Clifton (UWA) & Tim Perkins (ECU)

The integration of environmental needs, constraints and requirements into urban planning is one of the key challenges facing cities worldwide. This sub-theme aims to reflect and showcase the means by which Australian planners are meeting these challenges and developing best practice solutions to common problems. Through sharing experiences, it is hoped that this strand of SOAC 2009 emphasises the central role of urban planners in addressing these issues. The topics listed below are illustrative but not restrictive as we recognize the multi-faceted nature of planning for environmentally sustainable cities.

  • Planning for the impacts of climate change and sea level rise on Australia’s urban environments

  • Developing the sustainable built environment - planning for energy efficient, heat efficient and water efficient buildings

  • Integrating biodiversity with the built environment through planning, growth boundaries, green belts and other measures

  • Sea change, tree change and tee change: the impacts of changing lifestyles on urban form and associated environments

  • Providing and planning for sustainable transport networks within cities

  • Ensuring the optimal provision of public open recreational space within cities

  • Environmental monitoring and performance
