On the Avon River only 98kms from Perth, Northam is the heart of the Avon Valley and the largest inland town in Western Australia. As commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural district Northam offers excellent facilities including banks, supermarkets, car repairs, accommodation, restaurants, shopping and the daily Avon Link train service from Perth.

The Northam Avon Descent White Water Classic in August each year is the most famous of the many adventures available. Established in 1836, Northam town & shire have many beautiful heritage buildings now restored and used by locals & visitors. Its central location makes Northam the ideal place from which to explore the entire Avon Valley.

HISTORIC TOWN WALK
Northam boasts the largest number of historic buildings in the state outside of Fremantle. Maps for this historic walk are available from the Northam Visitors Centre. Allow 90 minutes.

Located 3km from the town centre Mt Ommanney offers a great view of the Northam townsite and agricultural areas beyond.

NORTHAM’S WHITE SWANS
White swans were originally introduced to WA in 1896 by British colonists who wished to create a little of the world they had left behind. The swans feeding area is next to the Suspension Bridge in Broome Tce. Bread is available at the Visitors Centre.
39. OLD RAILWAY STATION MUSEUM Map 3 F3
The Old Railway Station was built in 1886 and serviced the Goldfields and Eastern Districts. Today it is listed with the National Trust and is being restored as a museum. It houses a large collection of railway memorabilia. Option on Northam’s Historic Town Walk.

RACING, PACING & CHASING
Northam has large modern horse racing, pacing and greyhound tracks. These venues have excellent facilities catering for the racing enthusiasts.
41. SUSPENSION BRIDGE Map 3 D5
This spans the Avon River in the town centre and is the longest bridge of its kind in Australia. Built in 1975 it is an ideal place to view the river and Northam’s white swans.
