The
opening session will be an interactive forum, professionally chaired, by Dr
Cindy Pan. Dr Pan is a well known Sydney GP and media personality. She will
facilitate the session investigating Hand Trauma, drawing on the experiences
from Surgeons and Physicians involved in the Tsunami and those practicing within
a framework of limited resources and differing cultures.
We
are excited to be offering an update on wound care.
Jan Rice from the Wound Foundation of Australia is giving us an update.
Many of you may remember Jan from our annual conference six years ago. Jan will
be offering workshops and is happy to take questions from delegates regarding
wound management in the workshops. Please be ready to bring along your clinical
questions/ issues.

Feedback
from the 2004 AHTA conference indicated that delegates wanted their conference
to allow more time to share ideas and experiences and to discuss what had been
presented to them. To this end the committee has prepared a programme with more
time dedicated to panel discussion and question time. We hope you enjoy the
format.
The
conference will commence with registration at 8am on Friday the 21
October, closing at 1pm on Sunday 23 October.
On Saturday 22 October, there is a great selection of six workshops to choose from, with the option to attend two. Workshops will run from 8.30am - 10.00am and will be repeated from 10.30am - 12.00noon.
WORKSHOP
1: Getting the most out of todays’ wound care products - application, tips and
advice
Jan Rice, Wound Foundation of Australia, Monash
University
One of the most baffling issues with modern wound care products
is what product for what wound? In this workshop we look
at the products in their pharmacological classification and then
select a product from each group to decipher the most appropriate uses in hand
therapist wound care.
Jan currently is Manager of Education & Clinical Services with the
Wound Foundation of Australia. She is a wound consultant and
educator and is highly regarded in the fields of acute and chronic
wound management.

2: Customised compression garments and dynamic lycra splinting
Lisa Hannen & Melissa Slack, Second Skin
A practical workshop for therapists to explore clinical options for oedema
and scar management for a range of diagnoses. During the
workshop we will look at customised compression garment measurement,
prescription and design, the use of silicone gel in conjunction
with garments and the application of Dynamic Lycra Splinting.
There will be opportunity for questions and discussion, so
bring your challenging cases along!

3: The thrower’s elbow
Rod Whiteley
Throwing injuries to the elbow represent a significant
problem for the ball player and the therapist as
many of the more common problems are missed and
mismanaged. This session will describe common
throwing problems to the elbow, their history, examination
and management, with a practical session looking at
rehabilitation and throwing mechanics.
Rod is a Titled Sports Physiotherapist in private practice at Terrigal NSW.
For 12 years in Sydney he was physiotherapist to the Balmain
Tigers Rugby League, the Sydney Storm Baseball Team, the
St Josephs College Rugby Union, and he remains a Consultant
Physiotherapist to the Australian Baseball Federation. He
is currently completing a PhD on ‘Throwing Injuries’ at Sydney University.
He lectures to the Post Graduate Manipulative Physiotherapy
and Sports Physiotherapy courses at Sydney University,
and to the Post Graduate Sports Medicine course at University
of New South Wales.

4: Soft splinting with a touch of thermoplastic
Bev Quee, Surgical Synergies
This workshop will look at the latest materials available for soft splinting,
the fabrication of common hand splints and how to touch it up with a “thermoplastic
combo”!
The program will include:
Review of soft splinting materials: Breathoprene, Fabrifoam, Neoprene;
Finger Splints: Finger stalls, Buddy straps, Composite finger flexion
straps;
Thumb splints: Short thumb splint – Breathoprene, Adding more strength
with thermoplastics, CMC thumb splinting;
Hand splints for ulnar drift: Hand based ulnar drift splint – Fabrifoam,
Adding more strength with thermoplastics;

5: Synthetic casting
Helen Chamberlain, Smith & Nephew
This workshop will provide an introduction to 3 different styles of synthetic
casting materials as well as different undercast padding one of which will
create a waterproof cast. We will review and
practice upper limb casting techniques commonly utilised
in the Hand therapy environment.
The workshop will also look at a synthetic splinting / slab material called “Dynacast
Prelude” of which can be utilised to fabricate finger, hand and total upper
limb splints. Various splints will be demonstrated.
A practical workshop will follow.

6: Kinesiotaping
Thuy Bridges, Sportstek
Thuy will be presenting an introduction to the Kinesiotaping Method with
particular emphasis on its application to hand therapy. Discover how this
therapeutic sports taping breakthrough stands ahead
of the other taping methods for management of joint
dysfunction, muscle disorders, lymphoedema and
neurological disorders. Find out what kinesiotaping
can do for your clients.
Thuy Bridges is a qualified and registered physiotherapist, servicing
private patients in the Sydney area through her PhysioWISE
practices. She is also a certified Kinesiotaping instructor,
a certified Pilates instructor and provides consulting services
to a number of businesses and community groups in Australia.
Jan Rice trained as a registered nurse at the Alfred Hospital and completed her Midwifery training at Crown Street Women’s hospital before travelling overseas for three years. Whilst in South Africa and London she worked mostly in Plastic Surgery. In 1994, Jan joined the Wound Foundation of Australia, where she currently holds the position of Manager Education & Clinical Services. Jan is a wound consultant and educator and is highly regarded in the fields of acute and chronic wound management.
Jenny Ball is a longstanding AHTA member and is based in Hobart. Jenny has been an active member and past President of AHTA. Jenny travelled to Fiji in 2000 as part of an interplast team to provide education to Fijian medical teams.
Dr Cindy Pan works in the media and is the author of the best-selling ‘Pandora’s Box - lifting the lid on life’s little nasties’, a funny but information packed book on health, relationships, drugs and sex. Cindy writes regular columns on health and relationships in Body and Soul (the Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Sun Herald and Sunday Times), Good Medicine Magazine and The Women’s Weekly in Singapore and Malaysia. She is best known for her television appearances on The Panel, Beauty and the Beast, Sunrise, the Super Debates, Sex/Life, Big Brother Uncut, Test Australia: National IQ test 2002, the Einstein Factor and the travel documentary The Ties that Bind.
Professor WB Conolly (Hand Surgeon) is Associate Professor of Hand Surgery, University of NSW; Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, University of Sydney; Staff Surgeon, Sydney Hospital Hand Unit; Director, Overseas Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation Projects, St Luke’s and Sydney Hospital Hand Units, Sydney, Australia.
Associate Professor Graham Gumley (Hand Surgeon) is the area director of Hand Surgery for Sydney South West Health Service. Graham is part of the Plastic Surgery Department at Liverpool Hospital and a member of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Sydney Adventist Hospital.
Dr Doug Wheen (Hand Surgeon) is Director of St Luke’s Hospital Hand Unit and part of the Sydney Hospital Hand Unit team.
Dr James Masson (Hand Surgeon) is Director of the Sydney Hospital Hand Unit. James is also area director of Plastic Surgery for the Sydney South West Health Service and provides a Hand Surgery Service in rural NSW.
Angela Chew is an Occupational Therapist at Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital in Perth.
Rene Hamilton is a Physiotherapist at Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital in Perth.
Christopher Basten is a senior clinical Psychologist at Westmead Hospital, NSW. His recent research has included examining the psychological predictors of emotional adjustment to injury or illness.
Damien Finniss is a physiotherapist at the Pain Management and Research Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital. Damien is involved in research teaching and clinical practice.

Saturday afternoon offers a variety of activities including lawn bowls at
Clovelly, cycling in Centennial Park or shopping in Paddington Markets and
Oxford Street before the Conference Dinner.
To assist with planning, please tick the appropriate box on the registration form. See below for more details. A non-refundable deposit of $15 per activity will be required to make your booking. The deposit will cover transport costs, as each of the activities is a short distance from the venue. Additional costs will apply for rollerblading hire, bike hire, and lawn bowling as outlined below and payment details will be advised at registration.

Enjoy a relaxing time cycling or rollerblading through the shade of the old
Moreton Bay Figs lining the paths of the beautiful Centennial Parklands.
Mountain Bikes from $12/hour, Road Bikes from $20/hour and Rollerblades from
$15/hour. Safety Helmets are compulsory, and are included with the hire, as well
as knee, elbow and wrist pads for rollerblading. Locks, water bottles, racks and
bags available on request.

Paddington Markets in Sydney is an integral part of the famous Oxford Street
shopping strip, showcasing the very best of Australian contemporary art, craft
and fashion, directly by the artists and craft makers themselves. There are over

open-air market is situated in the grounds of the heritage-listed sandstone
Paddington Uniting Church amidst the Victorian terraces and modern art galleries
of Paddington. There is a wonderful range of food and an area to relax and eat
or drink coffee while watching the bustling surrounds. A haven for last minute
gifts, Paddington Markets is a must do in Sydney.
Or for those that prefer, simply wander the famous Oxford Street shopping strip.
Oxford Street is regarded as the epicentre of Sydney chic and cool, drawing the
famous and infamous, including the Fox Studios glitterati, all enjoying the
dynamic atmosphere that is uniquely “Saturday in Paddington”.
LAWN BOWLS AT
CLOVELLY
Join with your colleagues for an afternoon at Clovelly Bowling Club ‘on the
green’. The Club is situated on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. There are
180 degree views of the coastline, reaching from Bondi through to Coogee and
beyond. Here you can relax with a glass of wine and fun in the sun. Form a team
and battle it out for AHTA premier lawn bowls title. At the end of the day, take
a stunning coastal cliff walk back to Coogee (approx 25 min.) or there’s
always the bus.

DEEP BLUE BISTRO
The Conference Dinner will be held at the Deep Blue Bistro, overlooking Coogee
Beach, Sydney. This is a time to network with your peers and enjoy gourmet
cuisine in a relaxed al fresco setting. A hand related trivia quiz hosted by Dr
Ian Hargreaves will make the experience lively and memorable.
Cost: $88 per person inclusive of drinks and three course meal. Numbers are
limited to 120.
