A new National Action Plan for Education for Sustainable Development

Since its release in July 2000 the National Action Plan has provided a framework for the Australian Government’s approach to environmental education nationally. In 2006, the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage, in conjunction with the National Environmental Education Council, will develop a new National Action Plan for Education for Sustainable Development. Drawing on consultations with stakeholders, the Plan will set out the range of actions needed to contribute to the aims of education for sustainable development in Australia, within the context of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.   An announcement on the development process will be  made as this information becomes available. As the 2006 AAEE Biennial Conference coincides with the development of the new Plan, it provides an excellent opportunity for engagement and input on matters of national significance.

Conference Overview

This conference will take place alongside the Millennium Kids National Conference and there will be a balanced amount of overlap and distinction between the two conferences. An overview of the A2E2 conference themes and streams is summarised below.

Tuesday 3 October 2006: Arrive in the South West
On the evening of this arrival and registration day, participants will be welcomed by the joint A2E2 and Millennium Kids conference committee at the Bunbury Civic Centre.

Wednesday 4 October 2006: Learning Sustainability
The day’s activities will feature explorations into a wide range of issues in environmental education such as learning approaches and program achievements at all levels of implementation. Up-to-date presentations on Sustainable Schools will be included.

Streams include:

Thursday 5 October 2006: Biodiversity Education
The south west corner of Western Australia has precious flora and fauna in marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments that face the imminent possibility of disappearing forever due to inappropriate decision making and human actions. Excursions, tours and dialogues will be central to an investigation of the core of these issues to consider the variety of approaches for changing the current course. Attention will be drawn to Indigenous ecological knowledge and learning relevant to all biodiversity contexts.

Streams will include:

Friday 6 October: Sustaining Futures
It is now well established that our common future will not be underpinned by an oil-based economy as it has for most of the last century. Changes to transport methods and large scale agricultural production (based on oil-derived products) are particular examples of expected change. A wide range of perspectives on policy and planning for a sustainable future will be explored.
