In the year 2000, from independent research by Andrews Publishing House, Promaco Conventions Pty Ltd was the only company selected in the meetings, hospitality or tourism industries to stand alongside companies like Woodside Energy and Canon Australia as 'outstanding in their particular fields of operation'.

Following on from their successful publication, the "Quest for Excellence", Andrews Publishing commemorated the start of the new millennium by profiling 91 Western Australian companies whom their research found to be "Leading in the New Millennium".  The book included the success stories of the very best in WA business, and among them was Promaco Conventions:

Promaco's Managing Director, Don Pearce, has twice been presented with an award for Outstanding Contribution to the Meetings Industry (1991 and 1992), and in 2001 was awarded the industry's first Gold Medal for continued outstanding service, which is now known as the "Don Pearce Gold Award".

Industry Vision

When Don Pearce established Promaco Conventions in 1987, the meetings industry was fragmented across Australia, with no public voice or profile and no association.  Coming from the top management levels in government, Don had seen the value of professional associations and set about creating a strong national industry body. Within 3 years he had established a state Association in Western Australia and soon encouraged other states to follow.  In 1991 Don made his vision of a Meetings Industry Association of Australia into a reality. He chaired the association for four years, developing it into a recognised industry body that today has more than 1500 members Australia wide.

Don also became Chairman of the Perth Convention Bureau, during which time he persuaded the State Government to take the industry more seriously and increase their funding. His former position as World Secretary General for Cartography had taken him to convention centres throughout the world, and he now worked on convincing local industry and government of their enormous value to the community.  Adelaide was the only Australian city with a dedicated centre at the time.  By the mid 1990's Don had convinced the Court Government to support a feasibility study into a local convention centre, and the outcome was very positive.  But it wasn't until every other state and some regional areas had developed successful centres that Western Australia finally saw what Don had known all along.  The Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre opens in 2004, vindicating Don's vision and 12 years of determination.
