NEW NORCIA (Shire of Victoria Plains)
Just one and a half hours from Perth lies one of Australia's most important
heritage sites. Founded by Dom Rosendo Salvado in 1846, New Norcia it today
the home of 18 Benedictine Monks.
For the first time in 150 years, ancient doors have been unlocked and visitors
are welcomed to a world of olive groves, church bells and secret courtyards.
The architecture, with its strong Spanish flavour, dominates the Australian
bush setting. 27 of the buildings are classified by the National Trust and
the town as a whole is registered on the National Estate.
The buildings house richly decorated interiors, Old Master works of art and
extravagant furniture and furnishings.
